Sourcing in China & Taiwan: Beyond the Mechanics
ShiaoFong yin
A brief overview of the mechanics of SCM in China and Taiwan is provided to set the stage for necessary but insufficient conditions for success. The management of expectations with all stakeholders, especially cultural sensitivity, is repeatedly cited as a critical factor for success. These expectations are shaped by the socio-economic drivers, history and culture on supply chain management in China and Taiwan which differ in many instances from those of the typical US customer. The most significant differences will be examined to provide an understanding of the root causes and thereby, potential solutions, as well as mutual areas which can be used to strengthen relationships (guan xi).
ShiaoFong Yin is General Manager for Logic Sourcing, a procurement, supply chain management and business services company specializing in China. Logic’s diverse product expertise ranges from packaging, print, and promotional goods to OEM automotive components. A 0.75 generation Chinese American, she began doing business in China in 1998, leading a technology transfer team for automotive powertrain die castings for the newly formed Shanghai GM plant.
